for SNGs; before the photo-styl e change, it was one way to get a smile, usually. In India, the cultural practice is to adopt a serious expression for photos a la the 19th century style. (Back then it took about 5 minutes to take the exposure, so the bland expression was something that could be maintained for a period of time without moving.)
