Archana's Sponsorship

Archana, 19 mo, 2008Sponsorship History

Archana joined the program in November 2008. She was only 21 months old, although the minimum age is supposed to be 2 years. I came upon her photo on the CI site in December, and was intrigued by the idea of starting a sponsorship at such a young age. Since my eldest child, Moumita, was graduating soon, I signed on as Archana's sponsor.

Archana lives in the J neighborhood of Kolkata city (near Sarbari) with her parents, 4 year-old sister Anushka, and baby Riya. Her family speaks Hindi. Her 26 year-old father, Ravi Shankar is a day-laborer. When Archana was first registered with CI, he was earning only $36/month (very low for the city). Her mother, Anita, was a 24 year-old homemaker.

When Archana was enrolled in November, she was 2 feet 5 inches tall and weighed 20 lbs. She was too young for school, and enjoyed playing with toys and cars. She slept on the floor with a mat.

Typical of homes in the city, her house is made of concrete (walls, roof, floor), comprises one multi-purpose room and has electricity. There is a clay oven for cooking. Water comes from a community faucet and the sanitary facility is a community latrine.

December - CW Letter

Dear Ms. Jenkins
Archana and her family welcome you to this sponsorship programme. As she is too young, she does not go to school. She has one elder sister named Anushka who is about 3 1/2 years old. Archana likes to play with dolls. She also likes to play hide-and-seek with her sister. Archana sends her love and regards to you and looks forward to your photo and reply.

Archana w Other Gifts

April - CP letter

After her annual photo came out, I had sent Archana's birthday card with a copy of the photo and a photo of me when I was 3. The accompanying letter told about the snows, with pictures of my unhappy dog. Since her birthday was in February, I told her about groundhog dog and included a cartoon of a groundhog as well as a photo of a real one. Little did I know...

Dear Miss J--
Archana & her family are happy to get your letter, photo & birthday card. They convey their thanks for remembering her birthday and selecting such a nice card. The groundhogs stay under ground, then what do they eat? Archana wants to know why Buster does not like the snow. Does he feel cold? Archana likes ot see rhyme books. She is well. They pray for your well-being. Thank you.

Archana, Age 4, Feb. 20112011 - Age 4

February - Progress Report

Archana turned 4 years old on February 15. She knows to smile for her pictures now! (Although she looks a little anxious about it.) She is now 3'1" tall and weighs 28 lbs. In nursery school, her favorite subject is languages (which in her case would mean learning to read Hindi). She's too young for chores or talents or hobbies. She still likes playing with toys and cars. I learned a lot about Archana's community center and a neighborhood like hers from Lindsey's trip (photos, blog)

Her father's income as a daily worker has increased 50% to $74! For the time being, Archana's family is now my most prosperous family by far. (Ravi Shankar's income has been volatile in the past, increasing from $36 to $60 and falling back to $43, so there's no telling whether this will be a permanent change.)

And most important of all, Archana has a new baby sister, little Riya!

  • What a sweet young girl!  I'm glad that she has such a great sponsor!

kleotide, 2 years ago | Flag
  • I try to write each 3-4 times per year. My letters to the older kids tend to turn out long. I also try to stagger who I'm sending to (send 3 or 4 letters per month), but that doesn't always go as planned. It seems to take about 2 weeks for them to get a letter. Turn-around time on replies is usually about 6 weeks, although it can be longer or shorter. In addition...

...CI doesn't require the kids to reply if they've written within the past 90 days, to prevent overwhelming them as you say. (I've only recently learned this.) There are also different types of letters: The welcome letter and thank-you notes for gifts don't seem to count in the 90-day reckoning. "Child Requirement" letters are written twice a year, whether the sponsor writes or not. (The majority of sponsors do not write.) Those always seem to be written in March and September. (If I were CI, I'd stagger that. Easier on the translators, unless they have a cadre of volunteers who come in just for those periods.) "Child Participation" letters are replies to sponsor letters or letters the child initiates themselves.

A sticker on the letter will be coded according to the type of letter it is.  CR=Child Requirement; CP=Child Participation; CW=Child Welcome. The CP letters from India (at least) usually have a date typed on the letter, which seems to bear some relationship to when it was written or processed in India.

This long-winded stuff is useful to know (I think--I'm just starting to use it) to keep your letters in sync with their replies. (Your experience may vary if your child is assertive in wanting to reply to every letter.)It's easy to get out-of-sync with the CR letters, so that what you think is a reply was actually written as part of the semi-annual project. There's apparently a suggested template that the children usually follow (at least in India) for the CR letters, so they come out fairly impersonal. (They may be done as part of a school assignment, with the teacher requiring the kids to hit certain points, whether that's what CI intends or not.) Then you write a letter that is received w/in the 90-day period and wait for a reply (that won't be required) before you write again, the next semi-annual letter-writing comes around, you get another templated CR letter...and so it goes.

To establish a dialog, I'm now trying to time my "conversational" letters so they arrive after the 90-day period, rather than answering right away. That's 90 days after the child's last letter was written, not 90 days after I receive it. Hopefully, this way we get in the habit of asking/answering questions. I may send postcards or short notes when I get their letters, especially if they've had good exam results or something that should be acknowledged.

jenkinsg, 2 years ago | Flag
  • Wow, I can't believe how many children you are sponsering, that is incredible.

How often do you keep in touch with them? Do you write online or by regular mail. I have just started sponsering my first 2 children since end of December, and have written an online letter to each and sent a letter, including some postcards of whee I live by regular mail. I have still not heard from them, and living in Libya I think our mail is probably a bit erratic to say the least.

I was wondering wether to wait until at least I hear from them before sending another letter, as I don't want to 'overwhelm' them or CI staff who have to translate. One child is from Columbia and the other from Ecuador.

What do you think. Have a nice day

    Liz
