Elizabeth can attend school!

Today I received word from CI in response to the email I sent them about Elizabeth, in Zambia, who does not attend school because her family/guardian cannot afford to send her. Well, I am so happy to say that CI visited with Elizabeth's family and gathered the information for me, and all it will take to enroll Elizabeth in nursery school will be $135! This will cover school supplies, a school uniform and sweater, shoes and socks, PE clothes, and the school fees. What great news! It makes me so happy to know that soon, Elizabeth will be able to start school. which is SO important for her future. And I'm so fortunate that I'm able to help her with this!

  • JuanaCeline, CI can cover basic fees. The price of that school is about 6 months of sponsorship fees. That's way too high. They cover fees when it's a reasonable amount, mostly local public schools. Sometimes there isn't one locally, sometimes they're full, etc. For a child who's near a public school they do try to cover what fees are needed, uniforms, supplies, etc. But it's like when we talk about the Guatamalan kids...free until after 6th grade. There are still schools, they're just beyond CIs range. I just began a sponsorship of a new child and I know that she can't go to school because her school is at capacity...I'm sure there are other schools but they may be private (expensive) or faraway (transport costs). There are just so many elements. Not to mention CI is also covering health, dental, and nutrition when needed. It just really depend on each child's situation, sorry to take over!

  • JuanaCeline- That actually confused me a little at first, as well. I am also waiting on an education Special Needs report for my Jesus in Mexico. He also doesn't attend school because his family can't afford it, so it'll be interesting to see what kind of response I get- whether they say "Now that he's sponsored school is possible for him" or "School will be possible for him with a SNG of $--". I know I am the first sponsor for both Jesus and Elizabeth.

I will keep everyone posted on all developments! Smile

  • Frumor- I don't know exactly how it works when CI gathers information for Special Needs reports (which is basically what this is- just education focused). I am sure they don't promise the family anything, because that wouldn't be good if for whatever reason the sponsor wasn't able to provide the support.
