Saida's Sponsorship

History of Saida's Sponsorship
Saida's blog was the 2nd one I wrote after LiftOne started 2010. I've reformatted it to the style that evolved as the year wore on, adding additional photos and information.

2004 - Age 7

Saida joined the program in September, 2003, when she was 6.Sahida, 03, 6 I started sponsoring her in January, 2004. I'd been a sponsor since 1989, but after my first child graduated, I took a break for about a year due to some health problems. When I started up again, the CI web site had been launched, so Saida was the first child I picked for myself. I sponsor Indian girls, and usually choose based on lowest income. This was an easy choice--look at that little face!

Saida's father, Abdul Golam, was 28 and  a daily worker; and her mother, Sokina, was 22. Her little sister, Salma, was 2. They live about 20 km outside Kolkata, in North 24 Parganas District. (Districts are like American counties. Both the CI Indian projects are in the state of West Bengal.) Her family speaks Bengali.

In 2004, the family's income was only $11 month. Saida was 3' 11" tall and weighed 35 lbs. Her favorite school subject was languages, she enjoyed playing indoor games, and drawing, and her chores included carrying water.

September - CR Letter

Dear Sponsor
Please accept my best regards and wishes. I hope that you are fine. My family and myself are also fine. I pray to God that he may bless you always. I get all types of facilities from the programme, so I am very happy and thanking you. I am studying in Gh-- Primary School in Grade III. I go to school every day. I like to read the Bengali books. I am sending a letter and a picture for you drawn by me. You take care.
Thank you for your help.

Saida with building supplies, 2006How will the gifts benefit the family:
"Saida lives with her parents in a one multi-use room house. There is a verandah at the front and along the side of this room. The family wishes to convert the side verandah into a room by constructing 3 brick walls, 3 pillars, tile roof and much floor. 'We will have the width of the verandah extended by about 2 ft. There will be now 2 rooms in our home. We will have more space will be able to live more comfortably. We are very grateful to the kind sponsor for making this possible for us,' said Saida's father. 'We will be able to sleep more comfortably ont he new cot. I like my new dress very much. Thank you, dear sponsor,' said Saida.

March -- The side verandah of Saida's home has been converted into a room by constructing 3 brick pillars, 3 brick walls, and tile roof and brick floor. At the beginning, the family had proposed brick walls, tile roof and mud floor. But as there was some savings of bricks, the family decided to use these for the floor. That would make the room more comfortable to live in and also more secured. 'As there were some extra bricks, we used these for the floor. We will have more space in our home. We are very grateful to the sponsor for helping us extend our home and making it more comfortable,' said Saida's mother."

Dear Sponsor, At the beginning of my letter I send you my regards. I hope you are well. We are all fine. With your financial help we have received bricks, sand, cement, bamboo and tiles. We have repaired our room with these. We have also received a wooden cot and a frock for myself. We sleep on the cot. I thank you. Saida K--

School is started. I go to school daily. Now I have joined youth group. I go to our project's youth centre. I play with friends, chat with them. I feel very happy to come to our youth centre. We have "para dal".
[Activity Group?]

The name of our "para dal" is "Nabadal." [New Members Group?]The members of our Nabadal discuss about the problems of our locality. We hold meeting once a month.
Your child,
Saida K--

Typically, the kids are eligible to participate in the Youth Program when they turn 12, but in India, 6th grade is the beginning of high school--after the British system, like in the Harry Potter books. So maybe the "newcomers" group is an unofficial group for the 11 year-olds so they don't feel they're being discriminated against unreasonably.

Saida, Age 13, 20102010 - Age 13

February - SNG Report completed by A Manna

Since Saida had said in her last letter that she enjoys reading English books, I decided to specify that part of her 2010 Special Needs Gift ($225) be used to purchase dictionaries (Bengali, Bengali-English and English-Bengali), so she can read comfortably at home. There doesn't seem to be a compact English-Bengali-English dictionary like we have for romance languages. The 2 comprehensive dictionaries run about $40 apiece here, and other girls have used SNG monies to purchase at least one. I've also read that in early America, when books were rare, the 3 books everyone hoped to own were a Bible, a dictionary and an almanac. I also suggested that some of the money be used for tutoring, since she did miss a grade a couple of years ago.

Saida with shelves 2010Please list the gifts provided to the child and family:

  • 3 dictionaries
  • 12 months pvt tuitions for child
  • 12 months pvt tutions for child's sister
  • 1 salwar kameez for child
  • 1 steel showcase
  • 13 kgs (28-29 lbs) rice
  • 3 kgs (6 1/2 lbs) sugar
  • 30 eggs

Saida and her tutor, 2010How will the gifts benefit the family?
"The child and the family can use the steel showcase to keep their books, clothes, toys and other small household items in a neat and proper manner. The child is presently studying in grade VI and her sister is studying in grade III. Both the child and her sister have been provided with 12 months of tuition support from Jan. '10 to Dec. '10 so that they get special guidance that will help them to do well in school. The 3 dictionaries (Bengali, Bengali-English and English-Bengali) provided to the child will also help her studies and her to improve her vocabulary. The child will wear her new set of clothes on special occasions and festivals. In addition, the child has been provided with large supplies of rice and other essential food items needed for their regular consumption. The child said, 'Thank you Sponsor fo rtaking care of our educational needs. I am also excited to receive a new set of clothing for myself.'"

Dear Sponsor,
I start my letter with love. I hope you are well. We are all fine. With your financial help we have purchased a steel showcase, 3 dictionaries and large supplies of rice, sugar and eggs. We will keep our books in the showcase. The dictionaries will help me in my studies. My sister studies in grade 3 and I study in grade 6. We both have been provided with 12 months of private tuition support from Jan. '10 to Dec. '10. It will help us to do well in school. I am very happy to receive a set of salwar kameez. My sister and I thank you for looking after our educational needs. I end with regards.

September - CP Letter

Before this I had continued implementation of the plan I started by providing Saida with dictionaries: Since we can send paperback books up to 1/2" thick through KC, I included a copy of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, by Joan Aiken, with a letter. This is a book I enjoyed when I was young, suitable for readers 8 and up (or so). To see if it held up, I re-read it recently and still enjoyed it. I expected it to be somewhat challenging for a non-native reader, but entertaining.

Mother Chasing a Goose, by Saida, Age 13Dear G--,
I am happy to get your letter. The story book which have sent is wonderful.
[I hope that means she was able to read some of it before writing.] I will read it & I will tell everybody about the book. Hope all of you are well. We are well. It is monsoon here. But it is not raining & weather is very hot. My studies are progressing well. I did well in the exam. We are waiting to celebrate Id. Now Ramjan month is going on. After that we will celebrate Id and will enjoy a lot with all & will wear new dress. I am Saida K-- [I had asked about the spelling of her name, because she had been spelling it differently for a while, as girls will, then went back to the standard.] With regards,
Yours lovingly,
Saida K--

  • In late July, I sent Saida a copy of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, by Joan Aiken, via KC. I also asked how she wants to spell her name, since it's Saida on her record but she's sometimes spelled it Sahida. This letter was written sometime between approx. Aug. 10, when Ramadan began, and Idd, which fell on Sept. 11 here. (Both of these dates might be off by a day or two, since they're dependent on when certain phases of the moon are visible at the observers' location.)

Saida has written before that she likes reading English books. Before sending her a novel in English, I made sure she had the resources (dictionaries) to read it at home. I hope "the story book ... is wonderful" means that she was able to read some at a glance when she received it. I think the monsoon showed up eventually. This week there is a lot of angst because it's likely to rain on some of the Durga Puja festivities.
