The Story of Doña María
The Story of Doña María
By Cesar Ovidio Clara, field officer, Area 4, Patulul
We were traveling through the areas affected by Tropical Storm Agatha, in a place called Barrio el Triunfo (Triumph Neighborhood) in Patulul. We thought we had helped everyone that could be helped, when we came upon 75-year-old María Yoxon de Gómez, a widow and grandmother of sponsored child Byron Gómez Martínez.
When she sees me, Doña María begins to cry and tells me that she’s lived here for 58 years. It’s where she saw her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up. She used to come out and rest on these rocks in front of what used to be her house – a house destroyed by the currents of the Madre Vieja River. Now she simply asks God to give her patience, strength and courage to keep living the years she has left.
Doña María says that she survived thanks to her children, but they were also affected by the storm – and they have an even greater struggle. “Now who will care for me?” she laments. “They don’t pay attention to old people like me, because according to them, we’re useless now. Children make your life happier and they are the future. Youth make life happier, but we old people, to a lot of people, we’re a nuisance. I just ask God for his help as long as I’m still alive on this blessed earth.”
I can’t help but wonder: Perhaps people who have a deep love for children can also find it in their hearts to help this little grandma...

jawspope, 2 years ago | FlagHi Debbie,
I just made a donation for Dona Maria. This story really bothered me. This lovely lady should be enjoying her golden years and I want her to know that people on this earth care for her. Please let us know when CI gets all the donations together, what they have puchased and send her a big hug from me in MA.

jenkinsg, 2 years ago | FlagWhen I started sponsoring
with CI, there was a legacy program for sponsoring widows in Palestine. And Bani Mandir, an NGO that works with SAHAY in India, has an "Adopt-a-Gr anny" program. A prior version of the Bani Mandir page noted that families used to be focused on caring for their elder members; now that's shifted to giving their children the best start possible. -
debbies, 2 years ago | FlagConsidering that Doña María has nothing, any donations we receive could be used to provide essentials. Our staff has indicated that for her age, Doña María needs a bed, clothes and food, such as cereals and milk. If we can raise the funds we would like to provide her with the following:
Bed
Tableware and dishes
Bedspread
Clothes for her
We’ve asked about her housing situation, too, but I’m still waiting for info on that. For now, the best thing to do is make contributions for her essential needs. You can make them online as a “Special Gift” and when you receive your confirmation e-mail, just e-mail us to let us know it is for Doña María. Or, you may call our Sponsor Services Department at 1-800-888-3089 and tell them the rep it’s for Doña María - or if you are on automatic payment service, just shoot me an e-mail and let me know the amount you would like charged and I will take care of it for you.
Thank you everyone for your kindness and generosity!
