The Story of Doña María

The Story of Doña María
By Cesar Ovidio Clara, field officer, Area 4, Patulul
We were traveling through the areas affected by Tropical Storm Agatha, in a place called Barrio el Triunfo (Triumph Neighborhood) in Patulul. We thought we had helped everyone that could be helped, when we came upon 75-year-old María Yoxon de Gómez, a widow and grandmother of sponsored child Byron Gómez Martínez.
When she sees me, Doña María begins to cry and tells me that she’s lived here for 58 years. It’s where she saw her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up. She used to come out and rest on these rocks in front of what used to be her house – a house destroyed by the currents of the Madre Vieja River. Now she simply asks God to give her patience, strength and courage to keep living the years she has left.
Doña María says that she survived thanks to her children, but they were also affected by the storm – and they have an even greater struggle. “Now who will care for me?” she laments. “They don’t pay attention to old people like me, because according to them, we’re useless now. Children make your life happier and they are the future. Youth make life happier, but we old people, to a lot of people, we’re a nuisance. I just ask God for his help as long as I’m still alive on this blessed earth.”
I can’t help but wonder: Perhaps people who have a deep love for children can also find it in their hearts to help this little grandma...
Read more about the children and families affected by Tropical Storm Agatha in Journeys: More of the Story.

Hannah Teter and Ryan Sheckler are both up for VH1 "Do Something Awards" this year under the athlete category. These action sports icons might have a tough task ahead of them in the face of their competitors including Yankee Derek Jeter, Phoenix Sun Steve Nash and New Orleans Saints sensation, Reggie Bush.
"Hannah sells maple syrup and other products on her website to provide water to a village in Kenya, sold underwear online to support Doctors Without Borders, and had a Ben & Jerry's flavor named after her, with proceeds going to charity. She's raised over $250,000 for Kirindon and at least 40% of all net proceeds from the sale of her Sweet Cheeks panties line is given to charity partner Children International to help feed and nourish children living in extreme poverty."
The awards take place on July 19th so get your vote on here.

On a recent trip to Honduras, some CI staff were reminded by how huge a difference little things can make in a child's life. After visiting the Dr. Miguel Paz Barona school in San Pedro Sula - one of the schools for which CI provides support - they were inspired to shoot this video.

Since we've launched LiftOne and been reviewing your feedback, we've been working to provide you with the tools and resources that you've requested. One of the most common points of feedback was "how can I use LiftOne to engage others?".
While there have been numerous indirect ways for you to engage others via LiftOne, we've been working on providing you with more direct tools. We're excited to announce that we just launched the first of these tools.

Through a generous partnership with Visa, we've launched our "Click for a Cause" campaign on LiftOne. In the upper left corner of every page you'll see an ad like the one shown in the photo to the right. When you hover over it, you're given the option to click. Click and you're done. That's it - with a click of the mouse you're telling Visa to donate $1 towards the purchase of books for the libraries at our community centers. Pretty cool, huh?
The best part is that Visa has agreed to donate up to $50,000! While each user is allowed only one click per day, you can come back to click as many days as you like. You can also invite anybody else to click - they won't have to create an account or sign-in to click. It's as simple as visiting the site and clicking on the button.
So, that's it - a click of your mouse gives books to needy kids! Simple enough. Here's my challenge to you: how quickly can we get those 50,000 clicks?
I'll post updates on our progress along the way. Me? I'm shooting for under 6 months. [image]

Since we've launched LiftOne and been reviewing your feedback, we've been working to provide you with the tools and resources that you've requested. One of the most common points of feedback was "how can I use LiftOne to engage others?".

World Water Day in the Dominican Republic
posted by Kristen Dalton at 03:26pm on 03/30/2010
This has probably been one of the most meaningful and emotional weeks of my year as Miss USA. I got the chance to travel to the Dominican Republic in light of World Water Day to help clean the banks of Los Pomos River in Bayaguana; plant trees; distribute water jugs, dispensers, and cleaning tools; and attend an educational seminar that taught people in the community how to keep their water safe and clean. But that is not all.
Why is doing this and recognizing World Water Day so important? Because every 15 seconds a child around the world dies from a water related disease, most of them being under the age of 14. I joined contestants from the Miss Dominican Republic pageant and a group of children who are sponsored through Children International to clean the river, and we picked up tons of trash. But the most disturbing part to me was the amount of broken glass on the river bend, where children could easily get hurt when going to take a bath or get the water they need for their families. It was a good feeling though to be cleaning Bayaguana's main water source with the children who actually benefit from this river, and who can set an example for their communities on the importance of keeping it safe and clean. There were some true leaders in this bunch. What really blew my mind is the fact that children bathe in this river, fill buckets to use as their family’s only resource for drinking water, and the water is stored in bins outside where it is exposed to animals, bugs, and pollution. The people drink from this and children die from it. Meanwhile, I am upset because I can't get the water pressure I want from the shower in hotel rooms when I travel - are you kidding me?! This was a great reminder that what some of us see as basics in life are actually luxuries to others and we should always be grateful.
The most heart-wrenching part of the trip for me was going to the villages to see how these families live, and I must say I was not prepared for this horrible poverty. On average, there were about 8 people per family that shared one tiny bed with no mattress, and some of the children slept on the dirt floor. Children were walking around with no shoes or clothes on - some with injuries that were never cared for because there are no resources for these families. I met one little girl named Caide who is just 4-years-old. She is the most radiant ray of light you will ever see. She walked up to me and grabbed on to my hand and would not let it go. My heart melted when she looked up at me and smiled, and I knew I had to do something to help her. I became her Madrina, which means “godmother” in Spanish, by sponsoring her through Children International. For $22 a month, she can now have access to medical care, dental care, an education, nutritious meals and, most importantly, hope. I believe education is one of the key factors in eliminating poverty, and I pray that this little girl will believe in herself and have dreams so she can have a promising future.
If you want to do something to give hope to a child around the world, visit www.children.org to see how you can help. Become a Madrino or a Madrina!! You can see pictures of my trip with Children International in my photo gallery.

Disaster in Haiti

by Garrett Kenyon
The world is in shock as alarming images from the magnitude 7 earthquake that struck Haiti Tuesday, Jan. 12, at approximately 4:53 p.m. ET flood news channels and the internet. The epicenter of the disaster was 10 miles (15 kilometers) southwest of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, throwing the city of 3 million into chaos. A series of tremors and aftershocks continued throughout Wednesday that could be felt as far away as eastern Cuba, more than 200 miles away. [image]
Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, is ill-equipped to handle a disaster of this scale. A lack of social services and infrastructure is complicating relief efforts, filling hospitals and overwhelming international aid organizations. The U.N. headquarters in Port-au-Prince was destroyed in the initial waves, leaving rescue and peace-keeping efforts paralyzed.
Up to a third of Haiti's 9 million residents have been affected by this disaster, and tens of thousands are feared dead as efforts continue to free survivors from the rubble and identify the missing.
The president of Haiti, Rene Preval, and his wife survived the quake, though a number of important government buildings, including the presidential palace and the foreign ministry, have been completely destroyed.
Sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, the Dominican Republic appears largely unaffected, though residents report feeling the initial tremors and aftershocks. Some fear another flood of refugees from Haiti will further damage the Dominican Republic's already-poor economy; but so far, reports suggest that the border is calm.
President Barrack Obama has promised immediate relief, saying America "will respond with a swift, coordinated and aggressive effort to save lives." Several American aircraft carriers are headed toward the beleaguered nation, including the USS Carl Vinson, which is scheduled to arrive later today with much-needed emergency supplies.
Several major relief organizations are working to bring relief to the Haitian people. Although Children International does not work in Haiti, donations will be sent, in their entirety, to organizations the agency trusts will use funds wisely and with an eye on medium to long-term renewal in and around Port-au-Prince.

Meet the New LiftOne

What is LiftOne?
Where it All Started
The LiftOne Project began with a simple idea: what if our dedicated sponsors committed themselves to recruiting one more person to sponsor an impoverished child? The impact of thousands of new children being enrolled in the sponsorship program would be huge. Entire communities on the brink could be pulled back from the edge. As new community centers were built, the effects would ripple even further outwards. Thus, the original purpose of LiftOne was giving sponsors a tool that would help them recruit one more sponsor to the program. Users were able to build their own webpage on which they wrote about their experiences with sponsorship and posted pictures of their children. Then they sent the link to their friends and family to help inspire them to get involved. It was a success. The efforts of those who used the LiftOne Project pulled many families around the world out of the depths of extreme poverty and gave them new hope. In fact, it worked so well we wanted to do more. The New LiftOne Tool The LiftOne Project was great, but we wanted to make it better. We sent out an email asking current lifters what they want to see in a new LiftOne. The response was overwhelming. We took these suggestions and got to work. You’re looking at the results right now. Not only have all the features and functions of LiftOne changed, the very idea of "the project" has evolved. While we still hope people use this tool to help recruit new sponsors, this new tool is really a gift to Lifters. It is no longer our "Project" to you...this is merely "LiftOne", where you define what this becomes. It’s no secret: some of the most passionate, intelligent and active people in the world are sponsors. What would happen if we gave them a place to meet, share their stories and ideas, learn from each other and share their experiences? Nobody knows. But we’re about to find out. We hope you use LiftOne to meet likeminded people. That you learn new things, find new passions, and share your experiences with others. You will get out of LiftOne exactly what you put into it. May you enjoy the ride!-LiftOne Team
