    This was taken in a barrio in the Dominican Republic. We were interviewing several sponsored kids in the neighborhood, walking back and forth. Everytime we passed this one shack, this little boy was standing in the doorway crying his eyes out. When we passed, I made a goofy face or did a funny little dance, trying to make him laugh -- but he just kept crying. I could see that he was alone. Finally, I asked a neighborhood boy about him, and learned that his mom was working, and wouldn't return until dark. He said the boy had a grandmother a 4 or 5 blocks away, but he didn't know if the boy could get there because traffic was bad and his vision was blurry. I kneeled down and did some more goofy faces, and he finally stopped crying to stare at me. Finally, I held my arms open. The little boy immediately ran forward and clung to me. I carried him to his grandmother's house, humming softly the whole way until he was almost asleep. When his grandmother tried taking him, he wouldn't let go. I could feel his little heart beating so hard. It was one of those moments where the innocence and vulnerability of a child makes a powerful impression on you. When we returned to the US, I asked the field staff to find this boy. Today, he's sponsored and receiving corrective treatment for his vision. I'll never forget him.

    Just got home from a two week stay in the hospital and found this picture and letter waiting for me. I also got pictures of Scarlett and her parents too. This should keep her for a while.     One of the most memorable experiences I had in Honduras was meeting the Rivera's, a family who lives, literally, in a school bus. Actually, make that one-half of a bus. The top of the bus was welded off, then it was cut in half, and set on the dirt ground, and that's where the family lives. You would think it would have been a sad visit -- but the familiy is so clearly in love with each other, and the father was so strong and motivated that "no matter what" his children would get educations -- it left me speechless. I wrote an article about the Rivera's, and it will appear in the next issue of Journeys magazine. Be sure not to miss it!
